Getting to Nha Trang
By Air
Cam Ranh Airport was built on an old American airbase in 2004. It is around 30 km from the city and serves only domestic destinations. The taxi fare to downtown locations from the airport is about 170,000 Dong.
By Bus
Nha Trang is well connected by buses. Most of the Nha Trang tour buses run from Ho Chi Minh City (in the south) and Hoi An (in the north) to the main tourist area around Bien Thu. The public bus station is just a 10 minute walk from the centre, making it a great Nha Trang transport option.
Vietnam has a convenient system of using the open bus ticket. You can travel through the country using this system. Over the years it has become a very popular and economic mode of intercity bus travel, especially among newcomers. The open ticket allows you seven stops for a $ 25 ticket. With this you can hop on and hop off at the popular tourist destinations in Vietnam. Sometimes the price and the stops are negotiable. Do not get in with great expectations about the bus, as it is not air-conditioned, and is sometimes overcrowded. The standard of the buses in Nha Trang depends on the company and the day of travel.
For seasoned travellers, this does not always go down well because of its infrequent schedules. However, there are some open bus ticket companies that are completely different. So check with locals or other travellers regarding which company to use. There are local bus transports too but it is mainly for the locals. These also run intercity like their counterparts. They are cheaper than the open ticket ones.
There are many touts who offer a great deal like air-conditioned, big luxury coaches for a higher price. Be wary of them and don't buy tickets from the first one in sight. As a thumb rule negotiate for the lowest price. You also have an option of buying one stop tickets from open bus ticket vendors
By Train
Nha Trang is a stop on the major railway line that connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The railway station in Nha Trang is located near the cathedral towards the northern side of the town. If you prefer to travel in luxury, book a soft sleeper. This is the premier class on Vietnamese trains. Do the booking at the train station itself. This needs to be done well ahead of your schedule as the tickets sell like hot cakes. Many private travel agents may try to lure you into booking your tickets through them. Beware, as this is a big scam in Vietnam. More often than not you will pay for a soft sleeper but will end up in a hard-sleeper. What's worse you will be blissfully unaware of this until you embark on the journey.
